DESCRIPTION:The ocean is in constant motion\, with water circulating withi
n and flowing between basins. As the water moves around\, it caries heat a
nd nutrients\, as well as larger objects like planktonic marine species an
d litter around the globe. \n\nThe most natural way to study the pathways
of water and the connections between ocean basins is in a Lagrangian frame
work\, where the ocean circulation is traced out using particle trajectori
es. The trajectories can come from either numerical integration of virtual
floats in high-resolution ocean models\, or from the paths of free-flowin
g observational drifters (surface buoys or Argo floats) in the real ocean.
\n\nIn this presentation\, I will show some examples of Lagrangian-derived
pathways in the Southern Ocean. I will show preliminary results on drifti
ng buoy separation in the pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean\, as well a
s discuss how these drifting buoys can be used to create a statistical mod
el of the surface circulation that can be used to study the drift of marin
e litter.\n\nFinally\, I will discuss the pathways of the different variet
ies of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) from their source regions around Anta
rctica to the abyssal subtropical basins using Lagrangian particles in the
SOSE model. In particular\, I will show how the mixing ratios of the diff
erent source types of AABW are similar once it reaches the three subtropic
al basins. This is suggestive of an amalgamation of the different source w
aters in the Southern Ocean\, which we show is related to vigorous deep ed
 dy mixing around 50S.
