DESCRIPTION:During the development of epilepsy a number of cellular events
are initiated that ultimately lead to an increase in neuronal excitabilit
y and the generation of seizures. The resurgent sodium current plays a maj
or role in controlling neuronal excitability. Our studies demonstrate an i
ncrease in resurgent sodium channel currents in medial entorhinal cortex (
mEC) neurons recorded from a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). I
mportantly\, increases in the resurgent sodium current were detected at an
early stage in the development of epilepsy\, and before the onset of spon
taneous seizures. These studies suggest a critical role for the resurgent
current\, in part\, for establishing the increase in neuronal hyper-excita
 bility associated with epilepsy.
