DESCRIPTION:Various proposals exist that exploit cross-Kerr non-linearitie
s between electromagnetic fields\, for quantum non-demolition (QND) measur
ements\, and other related protocols. Typically\, these proposals assume t
he existence of such non-linearities\, based on a presumption that the int
ernal dynamics of the medium can be eliminated from the problem. I will di
scuss some recent work in which we explicitly include the medium. We show
that homodyne detection of a probe field\, plus classical signal processin
g\, is sufficient to yield an itinerant microwave photon counter with fide
lities above 90%. Our analysis has implications for the validity of a wide
r range of proposed cross-Kerr based quantum information protocols\, which
  may need revision in consequence.\n
