DESCRIPTION:The seminar will begin with an introduction to the case study
of rare-earth phosphate glasses\, their optical and magnetic materials-int
erest\, and an overview of the structural work that determines their basic
structural units. The inaccessibility of conventional diffraction and spe
ctroscopy methods towards the minimum rare-earth distance\, which dictates
their physical properties\, is explained. There follows a presentation of
the development of several novel and complex diffraction methods that hel
p reveal this materials-centred important R...R separation: via anomalous
X-ray and neutron scattering\, and a magnetic difference experiment.
