DESCRIPTION:As part of the three day meeting on\n_Countable ordinals and f
ast growing functions_\nI will teach\n\n*A short introduction to Ordinal N
 otations*.\n\nI will take a pseudo-historical approach covering\n\n* Canto
r -- the problem that led him to discover (invent) ordinals\n* Hardy -- h
is attempt to index the continuum using ordinals\n* Veblen -- how he produ
ced hierarchies that named larger and larger\n ordinals\n\nThat takes us
up to 1908\, when Veblen was writing. We now jump to the\n1950s with\n\n*
Bachmann and Schüutte -- a brief look at what they did\n\n* Modern meth
ods -- if there is time.\n\nI am writing a companion set of notes that wi
ll probably cover more\nthan can be done in the talks. A draft of these ca
 n be found at\n\n http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~hsimmons/TEMP\n\nas the not
es\n\n OrdNotes.pdf\n\nThese will change as I get them in b
etter shape.\n\nIn due course I will also provide links to other relevant
 material.\n\n\nHarold Simmons\n
