DESCRIPTION:The latest surace wave tomographic models of Australia are pre
sented. These models incorporate new data\, particularly useful in the wes
tern half of the continent\, containing the majority of the oldest Archaea
n cratons. A variety of improved techniques have been developed to improve
the reliabilty of the tomographic images. Multiple starting models are \n
used within the waveform inversion procedure\, giving improved path covera
ge\, and a better estimate on the uncertainty of the 1D path averaged mode
 l. A multi-scale tomographic method is illustrated\, thus \ndamping the fi
nal images towards large scale features in the data\, rather than the init
ial\, homogenous\, a priori reference model. The qualititative relationshi
p between the tomographic images and known geology and tectonics is discus
sed\, with focus on the shallow structure of the eastern margin of Austral
ia\, and also the variations in structure of the shield region.
