SUMMARY:Engineering the Future of Medicine - Professor Serena Best\, Depar
tment of Materials Science\, Cambridge University

DESCRIPTION:Professor Serena Best will talk about how engineering is enabl
ing advances in medicine - in particular 'regenerative medicine' and tissu
e engineering.\n\nAdvances in regenerative medicine depend on the developm
ent of bioactive scaffolds that are able to control the biological process
es in adjacent tissues. This talk will describe the innovation of several
types of materials for a range of skeletal and soft tissue repair applicat
ions.\n\nProfessor Best co-directs the Cambridge Centre for Medical Materi
als (CCMM)\, a major research activity within the Department of Materials
Science and Metallurgy (MSM)\, University of Cambridge.\n\nHer main resear
ch interest is in field of bioactive ceramics\, ceramic composites and col
lagen-based scaffolds for hard and soft tissue repair. She is particularly
interested in synthetic bone materials.\n\nProfessor Best completed a fir
st degree in Materials Technology at Surrey University and a PhD in Biocer
amics at Queen Mary and Westfield College. She then worked at the Cookson
Technology Centre in Yarnton\, Oxfordshire. She returned to Queen Mary and
Westfield College to run the Bioceramics Research Group\; a particular in
terest in the Group was novel apatite-based ceramics. Professor Best was a
ppointed reader in the Department of Materials Science at Cambridge Univer
sity in 2004 having served as lecturer since 2000. Her prizewinning work o
n apatites has led to two company spin-outs: Orthomimetics (now Tigenix) a
nd Apatech Ltd (now Baxter).\n\nDate: Tuesday 25th November\n\nTime: Refre
shments served from 18.30. Talk starts at 19.00. Ends by 21:00 following q
uestions and discussion.\n\nVenue: Institute for Manufacturing\, Cambridge
University\, Alan Reece Building\, 17 Charles Babbage Road\, Cambridge CB
 3 0FS ("directions":http://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/contact/). There is ample
free parking in the IfM's carpark beside the building\; the carpark entra
nce is just past the IfM's service road.\n\nFree to attend. Booking not re
quired. All welcome.\n\nThis talk is open to the public and is suitable fo
r young people\, students and engineers. You are encouraged to pass on thi
s invitation and bring with you colleagues\, friends and family who are in
terested in engineering and medicine.\n\nA poster to advertise this talk c
