DESCRIPTION:Dr Michael Llewellyn-Smith will discuss the value of land and 
 planning controls which impact on its development potential\; the distinct
  but complementary processes of strategic planning and development assessm
 ent\; the National Framework for Local Plans in England and a comparison w
 ith South Australia\; good design principles\; the role of elected officia
 ls\; "getting it right"\; and the nature of planning - then he will draw s
 ome conclusions.\n\nDr Michael Llewellyn-Smith\, AM\, KStJ\, JP read Archi
 tecture at the University of Cambridge and worked as a private sector arch
 itect in London and Melbourne before teaching architecture at Sydney Unive
 rsity. \n   After working as a consultant on the City of Sydney Strategic 
 Plan 1971 he became the Chief Planning Officer and subsequently the Deputy
  City Planner of Sydney. In 1974 Michael was appointed as the City Planner
  of Adelaide and from 1977 until 1981 he was also a Commissioner of the Ci
 ty of Adelaide Planning Commission. He then served as the Town Clerk/Chief
  Executive Officer of the City of Adelaide from 1982 until 1994 when he be
 came the Managing Director of Llewellyns International an urban management
  consulting company. He worked in Poland\, Sri Lanka and South Africa and 
 throughout Australia\, particularly for the City of Prospect.\n   In Novem
 ber 2010 Michael was elected as an Area Councillor of the City of Adelaide
  for a four year term. He was a member of the joint City/State Capital Cit
 y Committee and the Chair of Council’s City Planning and Development Com
 mittee. He served as the Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide 2013 
 – 14.\n   Dr Llewellyn-Smith is a Life Fellow of both the Australian Ins
 titute of Architects and the Planning Institute Australia and is a Life Me
 mber of Local Government Managers Australia.  He was a Visiting Research F
 ellow at the School of the Built Environment\, The University of Adelaide 
 until October 2014 when he left Adelaide and became a Visiting Scholar at 
 the Martin Centre for Urban Studies and at Pembroke College.\n
