DESCRIPTION:Spontaneous scalarization is a scenario in some scalar-tensor
theories of gravity where non-perturbative (order-of-unity strength) scala
r fields can develop near neutron stars. I will explain the basics of spon
taneous scalarization and how we evolve spacetimes in this theory using nu
merical relativity techniques. I will describe the scalar-tensor theory pa
rameter space that allows large deviations from GR\, and speculate on some
merger cases where the gravitational signal can be analyzed to identify s
 uch deviations.
