DESCRIPTION:I will review the science aims of the upcoming ESA PLATO missi
 on. In particular its key and unique ability to detect and characterise ex
 tra-solar planets down to Earth masses\, in the habitable zone around sola
 r type stars.\n\nI will comment on the current technical development of th
 e mission\, and note the role that the IoA\, Cambridge will undertake in t
 he development and operation of the extrasolar planet analysis system.
