DESCRIPTION:Interactive markers\, from barcodes to QR codes\, are now comm
onplace in the world around us. We see them on public transport\, in shops
\, in restaurants\, on products. Unfortunately\, they are also basically u
gly:\ndesigned to encode many bits and be robustly detectable by any reade
r in different environments\, they are unwelcome in many environments.\nIm
age detection is an alternative approach but relies on recognising a relat
ively small set of predetermined images. In this research we explore encod
ing information in the topographic structure of the image\, refining the a
pproach taken by Costanza et al in the d-touch system. I will describe wor
k we have done over the past three years in the Aestheticodes project to r
efine d-touch\, to implement our system as iPhone and Android apps\, and t
o work with a range of partners to create and deploy Aestheticodes in a va
riety of materials and contexts. I will also talk about some of the work t
hat is currently ongoing.\n\nAnd if anyone would like to have a go creatin
g some Aestheticodes\, bring your drawing implements of choice and install
  our app!\n
