DESCRIPTION:Multispectral reflectance imaging is a non-destructive analysi
s technique that can be used to investigate the micro appearance of comple
x surface materials that show striking angle-dependent colour effects. Bas
ic analysis of multispectral goniometric measures includes the extraction
of components of the bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRD
 F) and visualization in different colour spaces for human classification t
asks. Other mathematical procedures include pattern matching for recogniti
on and classification of spatially-varying reflectance properties and the
investigation on the statistical organization of colour coordinates from u
ser-defined regions of interest. In the present talk\, I will focus on the
research I have conducted in the last years on certain structurally colou
red biological materials found in nature and synthetic surface coatings co
 ntaining special flake-shaped pigments.
