DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will discuss user interface optimisation from t
 wo perspectives: 1) ensuring we are optimising a user interface in such a 
 way that users perceive the performance benefit\; and 2) ensuring we are a
 pproaching the design objectives correctly when optimising for performance
 . I will illustrate this discussion with two examples.\nFirst I will prese
 nt a recent model we have developed which predicts whether users can detec
 t performance differences in user interface designs. Thereafter I will rev
 eal a design for entering text at on a\nsmart watch at over 40 words-per-m
 inute on average using a regular touchscreen QWERTY keyboard.
