DESCRIPTION:This seminar will explore key concepts and research findings r
 elating to desistance and in relation to the impact of the arts in prison 
 environments.\nThe challenge is to relate one set of findings to the other
 . Sarah Colvin and Loraine Gelsthorpe will examine connections\, possibili
 ties and questions.\n\n*Sarah Colvin *is Schröder Professor of German and
  has published on German literature\, terrorism\, and prisoner writing. Sh
 e has published on prison\nwriting by women and by terrorists and on priso
 n theatre in Germany. She evaluated a major Scottish arts in prisons proje
 ct ("Inspiring Change" in\n2010)\, and recently produced research for Lond
 on-based Clean Break theatre company (which works with women prisoners\, f
 ormer prisoners\, and women at\nrisk). She is a steering committee member 
 for the  UK's National Alliance for Arts in Criminal Justice (NAACJ).\n\n*
 \nLoraine Gelsthorpe* is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at 
 the Institute of Criminology\, University of Cambridge.  She is President 
 of the\nBritish Society of Criminology\, and in Cambridge Director of the 
 ESRC Doctoral Training Centre across the social sciences. She has previous
 ly carried out research on the impact of music in prisons (for the Irene T
 aylor Trust: http://irenetaylortrust.com) and is currently embarking on ne
 w research in this direction. Loraine has written extensively on women\, c
 rime and criminal justice\, community penalties\, and youth justice.\n
