DESCRIPTION:Explosive loading\, for example in mining\, can subject geolog
ical materials to rapid loading to pressures in the gigapascal range. In o
rder to better understand the response of materials to such environments\,
and optimise the industrial processes involved\, controlled experiments c
an be conducted in the laboratory. This talk will detail the results of a
number of experimental investigations conducted in the SMF group\, includi
ng the development of a novel technique to measure unloading in granular m
 aterials.
