DESCRIPTION:This seminar draws on observational data from two research stu
 dies in young offenders’ institutions and secure training centres to ref
 lect on the role of the arts in youth custody. Liberating or confining?  T
 ransforming or passing time? These are the questions that will be consider
 ed in a discussion of how youth justice policies and the particularities o
 f the secure setting shape the conceptual reach and delivery of arts educa
 tion for young people in custody.\n\n*Biography\n\nCaroline Lanskey* is an
  Affiliated Lecturer at the Institute of Criminology. After completing her
  PhD in Education at the University of Cambridge\, she moved to the Instit
 ute of Criminology where she has been involved in a number of research pro
 jects at the intersection of education and criminal justice: an evaluation
  of a training intervention for staff in secure settings for young people\
 ; an ESRC postdoctoral research fellowship on the education of young peopl
 e in custody and\, most recently a project on the education pathways of yo
 ung people in the youth justice system.  She is currently developing resea
 rch with Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe on the impact of the Arts in Crimina
 l Justice. \n
