DESCRIPTION:Do you know how much water you use each day - not\njust the 5
litres you may drink\, or the 150\nlitres you guzzle to cook\, wash\, and
flush the\ntoilet with. It takes around 500 litres of water\nto grow the w
heat to produce a loaf of bread. A\nstaggering 11\,000 litres to feed enou
gh cow to\nmake a quarter-pound hamburger. You could take 25\nbaths in the
water it takes to grow the cotton\nfor just one T-shirt? The South East o
f Britain\nhas less water per capita than the Sudan or\nEthiopia and while
there is less and less rain\nour demand grows. Slowly but surely we're\nd
raining our rivers and hillside springs dry.\nMuch more alarming\, we impo
rt huge volumes of\nwater in our dockside deliveries of wheat\, beef\,\nri
ce? And while our water crisis is relatively\ntranquil\, it is repeated -
often in vastly more\ndangerous form - across the world.\n\nThat we face a
world-wide crisis is no idle\nthreat. Pearce's 15-year research into wate
r\nissues has taken him all over the world. His\nexperiences will reveal t
 he personal stories\nbehind failing rivers\, barren fields\,\ndesertificat
ion\, floods and water wars. He will\ngive a clear and terrifying picture
of the\nconsequences if no remedial action is taken\, but\nalso a brillia
ntly challenging explanation of the\nsteps we must take to ensure the 'blu
e revolution' the world desperately\nneeds.\n\n\nFred Pearce is a former n
ews editor at New\nScientist magazine\, and is currently its\nenvironment
and development consultant. He also\nwrites regularly for the Independent
and the\nTimes Higher Education Supplement\, the Boston\nGlobe and Foreign
Policy in the US and has\nwritten reports and extended journalism for WWF
\,\nthe UN Environment Programme\, the Red Cross\,\nUNESCO\, the World Ban
k and the UK Environment\nAgency. He is syndicated in Japan\, Australia an
d\nelsewhere and has filed articles from more than\n50 countries in the pa
st decade.\n\nHe was voted BEMA Environment Journalist of the\nYear in 200
 1 and has been short-listed for the\nsame award in 2000\, 2002 and 2003. H
e is a past\nrecipient of the Peter Kent Conservation Book\nAward and the
 TES Junior Information Book Award.\n
