DESCRIPTION:Currently\, there is much debate as to how reading should be t
aught in schools. This has focused largely on the teaching of phonics but
scant attention has been paid to the teaching of comprehension. This sessi
on will outline how recent research has developed our understanding of the
reading comprehension process. It will also be noted that these findings
have remained largely absent from the debate. It will be argued that these
findings need to be explicit to teachers of reading\; and that the readin
g curriculum and its associated assessment practices need to be reconsider
ed in the light of these findings. In the process the value of the simple
of view of reading – the current conceptual framework for the teaching
of reading – will be questioned. Some alternative classroom practices wh
ich support children's comprehension skills will be presented\, based on e
vidence from the numerous reading projects.
