DESCRIPTION:This talk illustrates how a series of 'blue sky' discoveries i
n the early part of the twentieth century grew into one of the most import
ant medical diagnostic tools. Several well-known contemporary workers wo
ndered what possible applications could come from the idea of nuclear spin
.\n\nThe concept\, together with the developments of superconducting magne
ts and super-fast computing power\, has become one of the most precise mac
hines ever developed.\n\nRichard Aldridge joined UEA in 1969 as a Lecturer
in Physics\; his research interest was into the effect of atomic disorder
on the physical properties of materials (collective magnetism and electri
cal transport for example). In the late 70's and early 80's he was involv
ed in the inception and founding of engineering at UEA. Richard's researc
h interests migrated to looking at various algorithms involved in segmenta
tion of images particularly medical ones\; hence his interest in MRI. Rich
ard has held several Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Colora
do and Western Australia. During his academic life Richard has acted as
a consultant to a wide range of industries both local and national and edu
cation in a range of areas from basic microprocessor technology through C
and java programming to basic electronics in the school curriculum.\n
