DESCRIPTION:The quest for identifying the bulk chemical composition of ext
rasolar planets and robust observational evidence that between 25%-50% of
all Milky Way white dwarfs host currently dynamically-active planetary sys
tems motivate investigations that link their formation and fate. Here I p
rovide a review of our current knowledge of these systems. I show how thi
s field incorporates several facets of astrophysics and planetary science\
 , including orbital dynamics\, stellar evolution\, astrochemistry\, atmosp
heric science and surface processes. I outline the fundamental outstandin
g questions which remain about the origin and evolution of these fascinati
 ng systems.
