DESCRIPTION:On general grounds\, it is expected that plastic flow with inc
reasing strain and length scale of inhomogeneity undergoes a laminar to ro
tational transition\, rather like any fluid flow. When this is applied to
indentation plasticity\, one finds that rotational flow produces a density
of geometrically necessary dislocations which can provide a quantitative
account of the indentation size effect. But at very small indentations\, l
aminar flow occurs\, with build-up of material under the indenter. Combini
ng these two flow patterns in parallel seems to provide a quantitative acc
ount of the observed hardness behaviour.
