DESCRIPTION:It is widely assumed that humans are deeply irrational and tha
t biases and errors in human reasoning\, judgment\, and decision-making ab
ound. However\, evidence for some of the most widely accepted 'flaws' is s
urprisingly weak. With case studies\, the talk will illustrate the importa
nce of rational standards in understanding human cognition and it will dem
onstrate methodological limitations in applying them that have led to misp
erceptions of how rational (or not) human beings are.
