DESCRIPTION:I will describe SUPERSHARP (Spinning Unfolding Primary for Exo
planet Reconnaissance via Spectroscopic High Angular Resolution Photograph
 y) which is a space telescope concept where the design is driven by exopla
net science goals. SUPERSHARP will be proposed to ESA as a possible M5 mis
sion. The many science drivers include the possibility of detecting bio-si
gnatures in the spectra of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. Conve
ntional thinking is that such a telescope has to be very expensive ($2 bil
lion or more) so the big challenge in the context of M5 is affordability.
I will therefore introduce some new ideas which potentially allow SUPERSHA
RP to be significantly more affordable than previous telescope concepts.
