DESCRIPTION:The current El Niño event is one of the largest since 50 year
 s. The last extreme event in 1997/98 caused severe worldwide weather impac
ts on both the environment and societies. The unfolding 2015/16 event is d
escribed in the context of these other large events and a review of progre
ss in ENSO understanding and forecast since the 1997/98 event is proposed.
If ENSO prediction skill has not improved beyond the Spring predictabilit
y barrier\, we now have a better physical understanding of why this may be
. We also review how state-of-the-art models simulate ENSO and the links w
 ith climate change.\n
