DESCRIPTION:A granular material forms a distinct and fascinating phase in
physics: sand acts as a fluid as grains flow through your fingers\, the fa
llen grains form a solid heap on the floor or may suspend in the wind like
a gas. The continuous interaction between the different phases in granula
r flows creates a complicated material that cannot be characterized by sim
ple fluid or solid mechanics.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present cutting-edg
e experimental research done on granular flows in DAMTP. We will look at a
valanches and granular size segregation\, at different scales\, with the h
elp of table-top and laboratory experiments done in the GK Batchelor Labor
 atory.\n
