DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to host Professor Ashok Venkitaraman\, the Di
 rector of the MRC Cancer Unit\, for our latest SciSoc talk. \n\nProfessor 
 Venkitaraman’s research focuses on the cellular mechanisms that prevent 
 changes in the sequence of DNA. These changes\, known as mutations\, are r
 equired for cancer. In October\, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded
  for classical descriptions of how the integrity of individual DNA nucleot
 ides is preserved. Professor Venkitaraman’s work follows a similar theme
 . He has played a vital role in elucidating how the integrity of whole chr
 omosomes is maintained. These mechanisms are commonly dysregulated\, leadi
 ng to genomic changes that drive cancer’s formation and progression. His
  exciting interdisciplinary work continues to shed light on the molecular 
 processes that drive the formation and progression of cancer\, inspiring n
