DESCRIPTION:Is variety the spice of life\, or are inhomogeneities the flie
 s in the ointment of experimentation? This talk will explore the response 
 of a number of inhomogeneous systems to high rate loading\, including meta
 llic powders and geological materials. Results will be presented to demons
 trate the progress made to date\, as well as detailing some of the challen
 ges encountered. The future direction of research in this area will be dis
 cussed in terms of the scientific goals\, optimisation of existing industr
 ial exploitation\, and potential new routes to impact.
