polymer brushes - Wuge Briscoe ( University of Bristol)

DESCRIPTION:Many biologically and industrially relevant interfaces are dec
orated with polymers and surfactants. Understanding the structure of such
soft interfaces is thus critically important. Using synchrotron X-ray refl
ectivity (XRR)\, we have studied self-assembled surfactant/lipid layers at
the mica-water interface using a “bending mica” method\, and observed
layer structural characteristics which differ from those widely reported
using AFM imaging. We have also used the XRR technique to study the collap
se of thermoresponsive polymer brushes\, critically examining the validity
of two competing structural models for such a brush collapse process.
