DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will present some of the results from my work a
t NTT Basic\nResearch Labs in Japan. We investigated interference effects
due to spin\nprecession in InGaAs/InAlAs heterostructures. In our heterost
 ructures\, a 10\nnm InGaAs quantum well served as a two-dimensional electr
on gas with\nspin-orbit interaction (SOI). We etched arrays of narrow ring
s\, 1-2\nmicrometres in diameter\, in the 2DEG and covered the rings with
an\ninsulating layer and a gate. As a consequence of the SOI\, the electro
n spins\nprecessed as they travelled around the rings and we could control
the\nprecession rate by applying a voltage to the gate. We detected inter
ference\nwhich was due to the spin precession by analysing the\nAl'tshuler
-Aronov-Spivak interference at different gate voltages. This\ninterference
is known as the Aharonov-Casher effect.\n
