cen) and Y Suhov (Penn State/Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:The talk will be about the weighted information (WI) and weigh
ted\nentropy (WE) where outcomes of the same probability contribute\naccor
ding to their weight/utility. Think of two events: a tsunami\nsomewhere fa
r away and a cracking tree in a garden next door. Both are rare and hence
quite informative (say they convey an equal amount of info). But they clea
rly are of different importance\nto us. The emerging concepts of WI/WE hav
e some peculiar properties\;\nthis is what we try to explore. Math results
include generalisations\nof Ky Fan and Hadamard inequalities and extensio
 ns of the\nShannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem.\n\nNo preliminary knowledge o
f Probability/Info Theory will be assumed.
