 director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography \nat the University of Cal
 ifornia San Diego since 1998. Born in Cambridge\, \nMass.\, Kennel receive
 d a bachelor's degree in astronomy from Harvard \nCollege and a doctorate 
 in astrophysical sciences from Princeton \nUniversity. Before joining Scri
 pps\, Kennel spent nearly 30 years at UCLA \nas a professor of physics and
 \, ultimately\, executive vice chancellor. He \nalso was an associate admi
 nistrator for NASA\, directing Mission to \nPlanet Earth\, the world's lar
 gest earth-science program. He is author or \nco-author of more than 250 e
 xperimental and theoretical publications.\n\n
