DESCRIPTION:Vertebrates are defined by their typical skeletal units includ
ing a cranial and postcranial cartilaginous or bony skeleton. Recent advan
ces in the knowledge of genomic and transcriptomics data\, together with a
ccess to developmental series in cartilaginous fishes have allowed the des
cription of developmental gene expression patterns that shed new light on
the evolutionary innovations of the vertebrate skeletons. In this seminar\
, I will focus on the evolution of the mineralization processes in jawed v
ertebrates\, both at the level of tooth and scale development\, and in end
oskeletal units of jawed vertebrates. Taking the small-spotted catshark _S
cyliorhinus canicula_ as a (tentatively) model organism for chondrichtyes\
, we will question what might be ancestral and derived in their developmen
 tal processes.
