DESCRIPTION:The discovery of high temperature superconductivity almost thi
rty years ago opened a rich vein of unsuspected and beautiful quantum phen
omena. The vast experimental effort that followed has led to many differen
t illustrations of new principles at work. This has been matched by intens
e theoretical effort\, with sometimes deep ideas. I will describe a direct
ion in which the central organizing principle is quantum-critical fluctuat
ions\, in some metals of known ordered phases\, and in cuprates of a new c
 lass of order.
