DESCRIPTION:A molecular structure is all that is needed to predict the pro
 perties and design the synthesis of a new substance with reasonable confid
 ence. This makes it possible to create new active compounds and address gl
 obal issues of health\, energy and the environment. Current predictions an
 d designs are good\, but not all behaviour can be anticipated and not all 
 molecules can be made quickly and inexpensively. Using examples from on-go
 ing research\, this talk will explore how present chemistry is delivering 
 ever greater possibilities for changing the world.
