SUMMARY:'Exposure Track' -The Impact of Mobile Device Based Mobility Patte
rns on Quantifying Population Exposure to Air Pollution - Dr Marguerite Ny
 han\, Havard University

CONTACT:Dr Olalekan Popoola
DESCRIPTION:With the aim of influencing future environmental policies for
reducing human exposure to air pollution\, Nyhan’s research focuses on m
odeling and predicting interactions between human populations\, urban syst
ems and the environment. Nyhan examines data gathered from various human-d
riven activities\, and applies models to describe the underlying principle
s governing these separate systems and their interactions. By leveraging d
igital information such as data from cellular networks\, GPS navigation sy
stems and distributed networks of sensors\, Nyhan develops new approaches
to study the interplay between human behaviour\, the environment and healt
 h. \nIn her presentation\, Nyhan will discuss a number of studies\, includ
ing a recently published paper demonstrating the use of mobile device data
to track the movements of millions of people in New York City\, for quant
ifying population exposure to fine particulate matter. This work has been
featured in the Guardian\, MIT News and numerous other online media public
 ations. \n
