DESCRIPTION:We discuss the dynamics of colloidal rollers staying close to 
 a planar wall in a viscous fluid. Available experimental and numerical dat
 a show that an array of such rollers exhibit spontaneous front formation\,
  followed by the development of an instability and eventual break-up. Hydr
 odynamic interactions between the rollers seem to be responsible for the o
 bserved behaviours. We study the basic physical mechanism which leads to t
 he instability and pattern selection in this system.
