SUMMARY:Behavioural Susceptibility to the 'obesogenc environment': gene-en
vironment interactions in the obesity epidemic - Dr. Clare Llewellyn\, Uni
versity College London\, London\, United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION:Despite the ubiquitous ‘obesogenic’ food environment\, not
everyone is overweight. Genetic susceptibility to the environment is thou
ght to explain some of the individual differences in weight\, with differe
ntial appetitive responses to food\, being implicated as the mediating mec
hanism\, so-called ‘Behavioural Susceptibility Theory’ (BST). BST hypo
thesises that individuals who inherit a more avid appetite\, and lower sen
sitivity to satiety\, are more likely to overeat in response to the modern
food environment and to gain excessive weight – i.e. ‘obesity genes
’ influence adiposity partly through appetitive mechanisms. This talk su
mmarises the role of differential susceptibility to the environment in the
  obesity epidemic.
