DESCRIPTION:We generally assume that two thalamic visual pathways - the pa
rvocellular and magnocellular - relay monocular and orientation insensitiv
e retinal signals to visual cortex. Here I describe work with Paul Martin
where we have explored the functional properties of a neglected but evolut
ionarily ancient thalamic pathway - the koniocellular pathway. We find tha
t this pathway includes neurons that are binocular\, neurons that are tigh
tly tuned for contour orientation\, and neurons that integrate visual with
  non-sensory brain signals.
