DESCRIPTION:The raw material of our history is the changing relationship o
f the islands\, the continent\, and the wider world. Closeness to the Eur
opean continent is the unique element in the history of these islands. Yet
the relationship connecting them has included many possibilities that nev
er materialised\, while much that was unpredictable actually happened. Man
y of the key decisions are still debatable\, not least\, in recent times\,
British intervention in two world wars. The recent referendum result open
s a new phase in Britain's relationship with Europe. To what extent is it
a break with the past\, or is it rather the logical continuation of previ
 ous history?
