DESCRIPTION:The study of poetry has been mandatory for pupils in England s
ince 1988\, and English examinations for 16 year olds have compulsory ques
tions on specified poems in exam board anthologies. Half a million schoolc
hildren a year for 28 years is a lot of poetry in the collective cultural
imagination\, yet until now there has been no systematic study of what tha
t body of poetry is. In this talk I will show how I am using digital quant
itative methods of textual analysis to see this literary corpus from diffe
rent perspectives and to facilitate fresh debate about its purpose in the
curriculum.\n\n*Julie Blake* is a PhD student in Education. Her thesis wil
l examine the nature of the poetry specified for study by some 14 million
people in England since its mandatory inscription in the National Curricul
um in 1988. She is interested in digital methods\, large archives\, and pr
 ocesses of cultural transmission.\n
