DESCRIPTION:Hypervelocity impact is a fundamental process in planet buildi
ng and modification. The prevalence of heterogeneous materials (different
minerals) as impact targets facilitates complicated shock wave - solid pha
se interactions. This can lead to locally enhanced pressures and temperatu
res (excursions) due to natural shock amplification mechanisms. Evidence i
s presented of these effects in lunar\, martian and terrestrial materials.
