DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the study of representation spaces has
led to the definition of a new cohomology theory\,
called commutative K-theory. This theory is a ref
inement of classical topological K-theory. It is d
efined using vector bundles whose transition funct
ions commute with each other whenever they are sim
ultaneously defined. I will begin the talk by disc
ussing some general properties of the &bdquo\;clas
sifying space for commutativity in a Lie group&ldq
uo\; introduced by Adem-Gomez. Specialising to the
unitary groups\, I will then show that the spectr
um \;for commutative complex K-theory is preci
sely the ku-group ring of infinite complex project
ive space. Finally\, I will present some results a
bout the real variant of commutative K-theory.
