DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:*\nWe have proposed gesture passwords as a ubiquitou
s authentication\ntechnology\, especially targeting mobile device unlockin
 g. Gesture\npasswords present a fascinating design space for authenticatio
 n. They\nare distinct from graphical passwords\, which resemble text-based
\npasswords in the sense that they allow for the password to be exactly\nr
eproduced. In contrast\, a gesture password cannot be exactly matched:\nit
must be recognized despite not being input by the user the same way\never
y time. In this talk\, we will present the results of several lab and\nfie
 ld studies (MobiSys’14\, CHI’16\, CHI’17\, UbiComp’17) on studying
\nusability and security of gesture passwords. We will also present the\nf
irst approach for measuring the security of gestures with guessing\nattack
s that model real-world attacker behavior. Our dictionary attack\,\ntested
on newly collected user data\, achieves a cracking rate of 47.71%\nafter
two weeks of computation using 10^9 guesses. This is a difference\nof 35.7
8 percentage points compared to the 11.93% cracking rate of a\nbenchmark b
rute-force attack. More details of these works are available\nat http://se

electrical and computer\nengineering at Rutgers University. His work is f
requently featured in\nthe popular media with close to thousand mentions s
o far including\nseveral times in Scientific American\, IEEE Spectrum\, MI

ness Times\,\nDaily Mail\, and recently also in ABC News Radio\, CBS Radio
  News\,\nFortune\, Computerworld\, Der Spiegel\, London Times\, Slashdot\,
The\nRegister\, Wired (UK). Janne directs the Rutgers Human-Computer\nInt
eraction and Security Engineering Lab. Janne’s work focuses on hard\nrea
l-world problems\, and currently his group and his colleagues work\ninclud
es usable and secure authentication\, mobile privacy\,\nphysical-world cro
