DESCRIPTION:Tabloid journalism in the United Kingdom has generated much co
ntroversy when it comes to privacy protection. One need only point to the
Leveson Inquiry to illustrate the propensity of UK tabloids to intrude upo
n the privacy of public figures and celebrities\, along with ordinary indi
viduals thrown into the public eye through tragedy\, and the collective ou
trage this has caused. In the wake of the Leveson Report we have seen a fu
ss about press regulation and an unsatisfactory implementation of the Leve
son recommendations. This talk will reflect on the journey that privacy pr
otection has taken in the United Kingdom over the past fifteen years since
the House of Lords decision in Campbell v MGN and last year's Supreme Cou
rt decision in PJS v NGN.
