SUMMARY:Modelling entrainment and surface processes in atmospheric flows o
ver rural and urban boundary layers. - Maarten van Reeuwijk\, Imperial Col

DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will discuss the influence of inner layer proce
sses on the entrainment in an idealised night-time atmospheric boundary la
yer (Jonker et al.\; 2013) by extending the entrainment decomposition meth
od of Van Reeuwijk and Craske (2015) to wall-bounded flows. I will then di
scuss the interaction between an urban environment and the overlying atmos
phere\, particularly focusing on the effect of vegetation on the local urb
an microclimate. It turns out that the temperature reduction and the evapo
rative flux are linearly related\, and we explain theoretically why this i
 s the case.
