DESCRIPTION:Our talk will begin by looking at some of the questions one ca
n ask about Banach space theory. These mainly fall in to two categories\,
local questions and global ones. Results about the global structure of a s
pace can depend solely on the local structure in non-trivial ways\, and af
ter a few examples we will talk about the local theory.\n\nOne of the most
important theorems in the local theory of Banach spaces is Krivine’s th
eorem: for any infinite-dimensional Banach space there is some p such that
the space contains almost isometric copies of l_n^p. In this talk we shal
l consider a metric version of this result\, and investigate whether finit
e subsets of lp can be isometrically embedded into our space.
