uk/health-economics-cambridge/ welcome Patricia Peinado\, assistant profes
sor at the University of the Basque Country and Visiting Academic at the D
epartment of Land Economy and VCRA at Wolfson College\, University of Camb
ridge. In her seminar she will outline key features of the Spanish pension
system with special attention to the main features of protection system f
or disable people. She will further discuss how the welfare level at the t
ime of retirement is affected by disability and breaks in the labour caree
r.\n\nThe Spanish Pension system is a pay-as-you-go social security system
in which the different cohorts of pensioners are entitled a pension that
is supported by the contributions of current working population. Pensioner
s are usually entitled the pension at the age of retirement\, that is to s
ay\, when they are between 65 and 67 years old. Additionally\, for the peo
ple showing some degree of disability who become non eligible as workforce
in the labour market\, there are the disability benefits and pensions. Th
ese benefits and pensions are important welfare state instruments designed
to prevent poverty situations. However\, whether it is during a given per
iod of time or for the whole life of the individual\, breaks in labour car
eers imply a productivity lost that is not usually compensated. Moreover\
, the lost leaves disable people in a vulnerable situation\; not only duri
ng their working age but also during the time they are drawing a retiremen
t pension. In this seminar we will show the main features of the Spanish s
ocial security system. We will concentrate on disability pensions and thei
r role to define the welfare level enjoyed by disable people at the age of
retirement.\n\nEveryone is welcome\, no sign-up required. More informatio
