DESCRIPTION:What determines the productivity of tropical forests\, and how
it varies in space and time?\n\nWe report on new findings emerging from a
global network off intensive monitoring plots spanning Amazonia\, Africa
and Borneo\, where we measured all the major components of productivity an
d respiration. Our results show the woody growth rates of these forests is
determined much more by how carbon is allocated between leaves\, wood and
fine roots\, and much less by total photosynthesis. The biomass of old-gr
owth forests is shaped more spatial variation in the rate trees die rather
than the rate trees growth. I explore what environmental factors can expl
ain spatial variation in these patterns.
