DESCRIPTION:This talk will briefly introduce the motivation behind researc
h into damage of polymer bonded particulate composites.\n \nI will outline
two different approaches to model the same problem\; continuum and micros
tructurally resolved.\n \nThe continuum approach is found to be very pragm
atic and with a few simple equations one can adequately describe experimen
tal results under some conditions\, the most notable being the necessary r
equirement that damage is occurring homogeneously throughout the composite
.\n \nHowever\, to progress physical understanding a microstructurally res
olved framework is required. In doing so the computational and experiment
al overhead is vastly increased. Under many circumstances the problem col
lapses to one of describing of interfacial adhesion. I will present curren
t experiments performed to characterise interfacial adhesion in terms of a
so-called ‘thermodynamic value’ and micro- and macro- ‘measured val
ues’.\n \nFinally I will present the future direction of this research d
esigned to exercise a microstructurally resolved model currently under dev
 elopment at Imperial College London.\n
