DESCRIPTION:Thurston's geometrization program revolutionized t
he study of 3-manifolds\, and hyperbolic geometry
became the primary tool in the study of these mani
folds. Soon after Gromov extracted the key featur
es of hyperbolic geometry to study more general sp
aces---most importantly\, finitely generated group
s---and he has asked whether the analogue of the "
hyperbolic part" of Thurston's geometrization hold
s for groups. In this talk\, I will describe a pa
rticular instance of Gromov's "hyperbolization que
stion"\, motivated by Thurston's approach\, and ex
plain some partial results in this direction. Thi
s is joint work with Bestvina\, Bromberg\, and Ken
t.\n
